12 Thermal Spas to See In Hungary

Note apparently Hungary has laws about kids in thermal mineral pools! According to the relevant Decree No. 37/1996 (X. 18.) NM, children under the age of 14 are not allowed in thermal water pools. That’s probably why many also add in a water park for families.

The 70°C sulphurous medicinal water of the Bogács thermal bath, which rises from a depth of 500 meters, is recommended to visitors of our six medicinal pools mainly for the prevention and treatment of musculoskeletal and circulatory problems.

Stay nearby at the Excalibur miniHotel in Eger with an indoor play area, children's playground, and bicycle parking. Not for everyone, but I love the cave-like feel of this place, or perhaps Harry Potter if you’re into that.

Nearby attractions include Egri Planetarium and Camera Obscura.

Csokonyavisonta Spa

Surrounded by lush forests and near the serene Rinya River, it offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The water, emerging from 753 meters underground at a scorching 73°C, has a distinct oily texture that immediately sets it apart from other thermal baths I’ve experienced, though its similar to Wilbur Springs in Northern California.

The mineral-rich composition, high in alkaline hydrogen carbonate, iodine, and sulfur, left my skin feeling incredibly soft and seemed to melt away the tension in my muscles. The water has a distinct, sulfuric odor due to its high mineral content.

I must admit, the strong, distinctive odor took some getting used to, but I quickly came to associate it with the water’s powerful therapeutic properties.

The outdoor area, with its towering trees providing ample shade, was particularly enjoyable. There are two outdoor thermal pools, a children’s pool, and a larger swimming pool. The thermal pools, maintained at a soothing 35-37°C, were the highlight of my experience.

At just a fraction of the cost of more famous Hungarian baths, it offers exceptional value for money. While there are children’s pools, the facility is more geared towards adults seeking therapeutic benefits.

The real attraction of Egerszalók is the limestone hill in the southern part of the village, created by the thermal hot spring and the flowing water, which has become the symbol and trademark of the area with its impressive white jagged formations, which are constantly built by the thermal hot spring.

It is a calcium-magnesium-hydrogen carbonate mineral water with a high sulphur content. Calcium has anti-inflammatory properties and sulphur is an important component of articular cartilage.

Below the 10 m diameter dome, sustained by 8 pillars, there is an octagonal pool. The swimming pool, operating as a therapeutic swimming facility and with a sauna, was built in 1896. The thermal bath has been visited from 1936 on exclusively by men.

Rudas thermal bath can not be visited by children under the age of 14.

Radio-active hot spring water at the medical springs bath is with calcium-magnesium-hydrogen-carbonate also containing sodium and sulphate and with a significant content of fluoride ions.

Get a massage. Thanks to the artisanal soap made from the water of the Juventus spring of the Rudas Bath, which contains macadamia oil, the skin becomes especially clean and velvety.

Széchenyi Thermal Bath

Szechenyi Baths in Budapest is one of the best and largest spa baths in Europe with its 15 indoor baths and 3 grand outdoor pools,  saunas, steam rooms and even a rooftop spa greenhouse. Come and visit Europe’s beloved bath complex in a historical building.

After being built in 1913, the Szechenyi Baths in Budapest became a popular year-round destination for tourists seeking relaxation, recreation, and even love. To this day, these pools remain the most extensive medical baths in all of Europe.

Thermal Lake Héviz

Lake Héviz can be found in the middle of Héviz, Hungary, just adjacent to the northern slope of Mount Keszthely. This body of water is the world’s largest swimmable thermal lake that forms naturally and has animal and plant life living in it.

Lake Heviz is about 20 minutes away from Lake Balaton by car. So many vacationers who visit Lake Balaton also visit Lake Heviz. Stay within walking distance of the lake at Hotel Carbona Spa Residence Apartmanok.

This geothermal body of water is a beautiful place where people can enjoy soaking, swimming, and spending time with others. Admission is sold in three-hour sessions, day passes, and multi-hour passes that can be used over several days. Visitors can also purchase add-ons, time extensions, and other services offered at the facilities

The lake formed with its primary source bubbling up from 20,000 to 22,000 years ago. Because the springs constantly flow, the water stays at a comfortable temperature, so there is never a bad season for soaking. The entire lake is replenished roughly every three days with its continuous movement.

From a low of 23-25°C/73-77°F in the winter to a high of 36-38°C/97-100.4°F in the summer, the water temperature is rather varied. As one sits in it, they get a massaging effect from the water as it runs from left to right and up from the bottom.

There is even a hospital nearby where you can receive treatment with the water and mud from the Hévíz lake.
