9 Hot Springs and Spas Near San Antonio Missions National Historic Park
The San Antonio Missions National Historic Park is a testament to the convergence of cultures and the vital importance of the San Antonio River.
For the Spanish missionaries and the Coahuiltecan people, water was the foundation of life, agriculture, and spiritual cleansing.
In the late 19th century, San Antonio was a world-renowned destination for "taking the waters." The South Side once boasted grand resorts like Hot Wells, where Hollywood stars and presidents soaked in artesian sulfur water.
1. Ottine Mineral Springs
Located approximately one hour east of San Antonio near Palmetto State Park, Ottine Springs is the most authentic "natural" mineral soak in the region. Very relaxing and somewhat of a hidden gem a short distance off I-10 in between San Antonio and Houston and a few minutes from Palmetto State Park.
Most of the nearby hotel options are chains, but the Best Western Plus Longhorn Inn & Suites worked. Room was clean and quiet, though a little highway noise can be heard. They have a full hot breakfast and a manager's reception for guests.
Drawing water directly from the Carrizo-Wilcox aquifer, Ottine springs is a sanctuary of moss-draped oaks and prehistoric-looking palmettos. It is one of the few places in Texas where you can still experience the historical tradition of "taking the waters" in a modern wellness setting.
I like you have to have a reservation so it's not too crowded. Parking was great and they have a golf cart that will pick you up so you don't have to walk. You are dropped off at the entrance.
The mineral waters were perfect with 3 main areas at different temperatures. A hot/cold plunge area, and a sauna. I tried all 5 of the pools ranging from 54F to 104F
There are watering stations throughout the pool areas, hangers for robes (I'd suggest bringing your own for added comfort), fire pits, seating and areas to enjoy food from the delicious café. There were several spa services (massage), classes (yoga/ sound bath) to add to your experience as well.
The locker rooms are spotless, with lockers and changing rooms available. Before soaking, you rinse off in their beautiful outdoor showers, which set the tone for the day. Mineral sunscreen is a must to preserve the waters.
One thing I especially appreciated was the adult-oriented environment, they don’t allow kids under 13, which kept things quiet and serene.
But there’s an old building on the property that you should ask your spa host about! Ask them for the “history on the children’s ward”

2. Camp Hot Wells
Sitting directly on the Mission Reach of the River Walk, Camp Hot Wells is the modern resurrection of the legendary Hot Wells Resort.
Just south of downtown tucked away in a quaint quiet little area that backs to a park. You need to make reservations for the private tubs (there is a spot with two claw foot tubs for two individuals or a spot with a barrel type tub that fits two).
Stay nearby at the Embassy Suites San Antonio Brooks City Base Hotel & Spa and enjoy spa facilities, a year-round outdoor swimming pool, a garden, terrace, restaurant, bar, and fitness room.
While the historic bathhouse ruins are preserved as a county park, "Camp" allows you to soak your feet in the same sulfurous 104°F artesian water that once drew the world's elite. It is an urban oasis that prioritizes historical storytelling and communal relaxation.
The springs are sulfur springs so you do feel a bit like a deviled egg initially but the warmth is so relaxing. You can dip your feet in the footwells prior to your reservation!
Being able to regulate the water temperature was nice. There’s a cold shower within your private space that you can use to cool off or wash off after your finished.
The Bluetooth speaker that is included was nice to have to play some relaxing music, as well as the included water and glassware.
They provide two towels and a large bottle of water in the soaking suites, and there is a call button inside if you would like various drinks/charcuterie to be delivered, which is very convenient.
The rooms are completely enclosed, except for the far-right wooden fence in the cedar tub room, which does have some small gaps. However, the fence is angled in such a way that privacy is fully maintained and is surrounded by thick trees and foliage, so there’s no way anyone can see in.

Located in a historic building downtown, it doesn't feature "wild" springs, but it utilizes sophisticated hydrotherapy circuits, including eucalyptus-infused steam rooms and whirlpools that mirror the mineral-rich history of the city's aquifers.
The onsite hotel is lovely as well. The Mokara Hotel & Spa focuses on spoling you with on-site gym, a heated rooftop swimming pool, laundry and shoe shine service.
The lounge room has comfy chaise’s, calming music, and fresh orange infused water and snacks.
The one hour massage was amazing. It included gratuities valet parking mimosas other drinks were also provided. There’s a whirlpool, sauna and an eucalyptus steam room. They have a beautiful jacuzzi overlooking the Riverwalk.

While it is more of a recreational resort, its spa "Puresol" features a unique salt cave and mineral-inspired therapies that pay homage to the deep geology of the Hill Country.

5. Thompson San Antonio Spa
This is the modern, "cool" alternative to the historic spa scene. Overlooking the River Walk, the Thompson Spa offers a thermal experience that feels more like a private sanctuary. It is an excellent choice for the "researcher" traveler who needs a high-tech wellness environment to process data after a day exploring the Missions.
The spa is inside the Thompson San Antonio - Riverwalk, by Hyatt - so use your Hyatt points up! There’s plenty to do here such as a rooftop swimming pool, spa facilities, fitness center, sun terrace, yoga classes, film nights, and a games room.
The spa itself is beautifully designed, offering a luxurious yet calming ambiance. The facilities were pristine, from the steam room and sauna to the relaxation lounges—everything was thoughtfully curated for ultimate comfort.
We were served champagne and free macaroons that were made from the restaurant on the 1st floor. We sat in the eucalyptus steam room before our appointments, were able to pick our essential oils for aromatherapy within our appointments, and we given time to relax between services vs being rushed

6. Lantana Spa at JW Marriott Hill Country
Lantana Spa is one of the largest in Texas and is built on the philosophy of "curanderismo"—traditional Mexican folk healing. By incorporating the heritage of the Missions into its treatments (using local stones, agave, and mineral salts), it provides a culturally relevant thermal experience that bridges the gap between luxury and local history.
The JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa offers a waterpark, full service spa, kid’s care club, and 7 restaurants. While the resort is extremely family friendly, we primarily spent out time at the adult only infinity pool.
The Serene environment is well equipped with a jacuzzi steam room dry sauna and even an inhalation room. What is an inhalation room you ask? That's where aromatherapy takes place and all you do is sit and lounge and take deep breaths of amazing eucalyptus and lavender filling the air.
Water Quality: 5 Stars: Top-tier filtration and sanitation for all spa pools.
Ease of Access: 5 Stars: Paved roads and easy signage, though the resort is massive.
Ability to be Alone: 4 Stars: Despite the resort's size, the spa has its own private pool and quiet areas.

7. Hamilton Pool Preserve
While not a "hot" spring, Hamilton Pool is a geological marvel—a collapsed grotto where a subterranean river meets the surface. For the thermal enthusiast, it is a "cold plunge" of historical proportions. Because it is highly regulated due to its fragility, it is a prime example of a natural site being protected from being loved to death.
Stay nearby at the cute Hill Country Casitas. The outdoor fireplace creates a cozy atmosphere in the winter—you can bundle up with the blankets they provide and completely unwind. The property itself feels secluded and private, yet offers plenty to explore, with open space for hiking, birdwatching, and enjoying nature. The Pavilion is a great bonus too, with lots of board games to enjoy.
I loved the hammocks, watching the sun rise from the pavilion, sunset hot tub time, memorable hikes on the property, and being centrally located to so many state parks.
You have to make an AM or PM reservation months in advance. It’s a short walk from parking to the pool. You get four hours at the pool and they only let about the 30 in at a time. Weekends gets in fully blocked during summers and early planning is required.
Entry fee is $8 per person with an additional $12 parking fee. Only cash is accepted.
Be sure to stop at a local brewery or distillery on your way back to town, Jester King Brewery and Treaty Oak Distillery are great options.
Water Quality: 3 Stars: Natural canyon water; quality varies based on recent rainfall and bacteria levels.
Ease of Access: 3 Stars: Requires a moderate hike on uneven, occasionally steep terrain.
Ability to be Alone: 2 Stars: Highly sought after; you must have a reservation, and you will share the beach with others.

Health Benefits: 2 Stars: Primarily a sensory and recreational experience in a natural cathedral.
Nearby Amenities: 2 Stars: Very limited; you must bring your own water and pack out all trash.
8. The Woodhouse Day Spa
The Woodhouse Day Spa is a San Antonio staple for consistent, high-quality hydrotherapy. While it is a "day spa" rather than a resort, their focus on "The Vichy Shower" and mineral-infused soak treatments provides a localized way to experience the therapeutic properties of water without leaving the city limits.
They have a large quiet room with a like an electric fireplace glass panel thing with calming music, and the BEST cinnamon tea.

9. Chinati Hot Springs
For the true thermal researcher, a visit to San Antonio isn't complete without acknowledging its connection to the deep Chihuahuan Desert. It is a grueling 8-hour drive, but Chinati hot springs is the "holy grail" of Texas hot springs. Located in the middle of nowhere, it offers a primitive, mineral-rich experience that mirrors the isolation and spirituality of the early Mission frontier.
Set in the Chihuahua Desert, this remote, laid-back hot spring resort is 5 miles from the Hot Springs Airport, 8 miles from the General Store/Bar and 79 miles from the Big Bend Ranch State Park.
I truly loved having the pool and hot springs all to ourselves as well as the community kitchen and firepit.
The hot springs are a single tile and stone tub that seats 8 comfortably. The water runs 98 to 101, just right. The cold pool up the hill doubles as a GREAT star gazing platform at night.
There’s so few places left like this. There’s no Wi-Fi, no stores anywhere close by. It’s incredibly remote.
